Help birds to cool down this summer...build a bird bath
June 28, 2016
The trees and hedgerows here at St Eval have turned into a hive of activity now that summer has arrived...
The birds are working hard to build their nests and gather food so what better way to cool off after all that than to have a nice dip? Here's how you can build your own bird bath at home. The birds will thank you for this year-round essential...
Use a wide, shallow vessel such as an up-turned bin lid as the base of your bird bath. Ensure that the bath fits these specifications-
- very shallow sloping sides
- have a maximum depth of only 10 cm or so
- be as wide as possible, ideally more than 30 cm across
Lay out 4 bricks on a piece of open lawn or border so that the birds have a good all around view and can dart for cover if they need to. Make sure the bath isn't too slippery and put some rocks or pebbles into the water so the birds have a good grip. Fill with water and watch!
